Training & Preparation
Initial ALP Tutor training includes two days of instruction.
- In-person tutors will attend training at the ALP office in Uptown Charlotte
- Virtual tutors will complete their training online with ALP trainers. (Virtual training is exclusively for virtual tutors.)
Current training dates and times are HERE. There is no charge for training or materials.
Training combines classroom instruction with hands-on practice, where trainees learn to give ALP lessons using a script and multi-sensory techniques. They are also taught how ALP lessons incorporate research-based reading instruction methods.
After completing the training, you will have the materials, skills, and confidence needed to support a struggling reader.
Additionally, you will receive ongoing support from an ALP staff member at each school, along with continuing education opportunities to further enhance your skills.
No, virtual tutor training is only for tutors who will be tutoring a student virtually.
No. ALP provides all materials and lesson plans, so there is no need to create your own activities. Each lesson requires just 5–10 minutes of preparation, and tutors have access to a library of resources and instructional videos to assist with weekly lessons. Coaching, mentorship, and learning opportunities are available throughout your time as an ALP Tutor.
Tutoring Commitment & Experience
ALP Tutors commit to providing a minimum of two semesters of free literacy tutoring to a student in an under-resourced CMS school.
Many tutors go beyond this commitment, building strong relationships with their students and seeing the difference ALP tutoring makes. Some tutors choose to become “Double Impact Tutors,” working with more than one student at a time.
In fact, 85% of our tutors returned for the 2024-25 school year, demonstrating the lasting impact and fulfillment that comes from helping students thrive.
During the 2024-25 school year:
- In-person tutors- either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday; times vary by school.
- Virtual tutors- Tuesday/Thursday from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM.
Yes! Once your tutoring day and time are set, your schedule will remain the same. The only exceptions are school events, such as holiday parties or field trips.
Yes! As an ALP Tutor, you will work with the same student every week, building a strong and trusting relationship over time. This consistency is key to a student’s progress, as it helps them feel supported and gain confidence in their reading skills.
Students look forward to their tutoring sessions, knowing they have a dedicated mentor cheering them on. This bond is just as meaningful in virtual tutoring, where the one-on-one connection and encouragement remain strong. Many tutors find that these relationships become one of the most rewarding aspects of their experience, as they witness firsthand the impact of their dedication on a student’s growth and success.
We understand that things come up! Tutors can plan for and easily report upcoming absences with an online reporting form or to their assigned ALP student success coordinator.
ALP Students & School Partnerships
ALP partners with several Title I CMS schools that have a high need for literacy tutors. Each of these schools has an ALP staff member who serves as a liaison between school administration and ALP, providing ongoing support to tutors. ALP also offers virtual tutoring, allowing tutors to support students at schools beyond their local area, without the need for travel or disruptions to their day. Click here for an interactive map of the schools ALP serves.
ALP staff works closely with partner schools to identify students who would benefit from 1:1 tutoring.
Title I schools serve students who face the greatest challenges in our community. Unfortunately, these schools often have a higher number of students reading below grade level due to a lack of access to early learning opportunities.
Research shows that students who are not reading at grade level by third grade are at a significantly higher risk of not graduating from high school.
No. ALP trains volunteer tutors to provide literacy support in schools with significant need. We do not offer tutoring services to the broader Charlotte community for a fee.
